kakamega county conversations

With corruption highlighted as a problem in the health sector, Global Compact Network in Kenya (GCNK) held a series of county conventions in Kakamega, Nakuru, Kilifi, Mombasa & Isiolo under the USAID USAWA Programme whose aim is to reduce fraud, waste & abuse for improved health service delivery. Recognizing that combating corruption in Kenya requires sustained & coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, these conventions brought together key players drawn from private health facilities, associations, Chambers of Commerce, members of the county budget forum and Academia.

Guided by the Tenth Principle of the UN Global Compact on anti-corruption, GCNK Project Coordinator John Ndirangu, raised awareness of the importance of ethical practices and anti-corruption measures among private health stakeholders. The objectives of these meetings were to among other things, highlight the status of fraud, waste and abuse in the health sector across the five counties, introduce the Code of Ethics for Business in Kenya and engage the youth in promoting good governance.

With the need to equip citizens to own, lead and catalyze action against corruption, the conventions strengthened networks among stakeholders in the private sector leading to the creation of alliances and collaborative efforts to support ongoing anti-corruption initiatives. The events culminated with over 60 organizations expressing interest in committing to the Code of Ethics for Business in Kenya, marking a significant step in the fight against corruption within Kenya’s private health sector”
